Physalis is a genus of 75 to 90 species of plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The botanical name Physalis means bladder and is derived from the shape of the enlarged calyx of the true plant (Physalis alkekengi), which encloses the fruit after flowering. The true physalis is the only representative of this genus in Europe. Most other species are from Mexico.
